Do you need help writing an article? Below we show you the five most common obstacles when writing an academic document. In any writing, be it an essay or a research article, the whole process of sitting down and writing the article can be overwhelming. Even if you have read our tips for writing an article, something seems not quite right.

Usually, this is because your use of English may be a bit better or the article is not structured correctly. Sometimes it is because the writing is not “fluid” and seems very incoherent. Here are some tips for writing articles:

Grammar and punctuation

If you are a scientist or a historian, nobody expects you to have the command and register of the language that a language student has or that you have a perfect grammar and punctuation. In fact, this is not a problem, since you must strive for maximum clarity and readability instead of a Pulitzer Prize.

Use the correct length in a sentence. If it is too long, people will think that your work is tortuous and the message will be lost. If it is too short, it will seem unprofessional. When doing the orthographic revision at the end of the document, a box is opened that tells you the average length of the sentences.

While you should be careful not to blindly cling to numbers, between 15 and 20 words per sentence is fine. If you see that you are writing between 40 and 50 words per sentence, review it and find a place to divide it into two or three shorter sentences. You can also delete some unnecessary words. You have to be able to use commas, periods and capitals correctly.

Person and verbal time

The person who should be used in an article is currently in debate and some people preserve traditional impersonal time: … “It was discovered that”.

Others use personal pronouns, avoiding passive sentences: … “We discovered that”.

This is something that you should check with your supervisor and keep it the same throughout the document. The time should not vary in the same paragraph: if you start a paragraph in the past, it should remain in the past tense, whenever possible.

3. Ramble

This is the most common error of any research work. If you have a limit of words and you do not reach it, it is tempting to add irrelevance, adding unrelated information or saying the same thing more than once in a slightly different way.

4. One side only

If you are writing an article with a specific thesis, it is very easy to fall into the trap of using only the evidence that suits your argument. This is exceptionally weak and any reader will notice.

If you find a source that is contradictory to yours, you must accept it, since it will really give you the opportunity to demonstrate what you can do. You can strengthen your argument by providing counter-arguments from the source. Academic work is never black and white, so do not be afraid to admit that another point of view is correct.

5. Readability and flow

This is one of the factors that can make a job great and also one of the most difficult parts to achieve. Especially in writing a research paper, you must adjust data, info, knowledge to interesting writing style. If you find it difficult, seeking help from can be a good option.

The ideal article should flow effortlessly from one sentence to another, making it a pleasure to read it instead of an obligation. A lot of this comes with practice and some will never be experts, but a little advice is reading the article out loud to yourself. If you get angry reading the sections, they are probably wrong, just like what is written. Try to modify the grammar a bit.
