Power Platform

Microsoft's low-code platform: Power Apps for business apps, Power Automate for workflows, Power Pages for external websites and Dataverse for shared data, with Copilot Studio and Power BI in the same family, governed through the Power Platform admin center.

Overview

Power Apps builds canvas and model-driven apps on Dataverse or on data in SharePoint, SQL Server, Dynamics 365 and other sources. Power Automate runs cloud flows triggered by events, buttons or schedules, and Copilot can draft a flow from a description in the new designer. Power Pages builds external-facing websites on the same Dataverse data.

A new AI-native Power Apps experience is in preview. People need a license to run the apps you build; a free Developer Plan exists for building.

Governance runs through the Power Platform admin center and Managed Environments, which add data policies, sharing limits, usage insights and pipelines. Unmanaged developer environments are deprecated: to keep one, enable Managed Environments on it before December 15, 2026.

If a process lives entirely inside one SaaS application that has its own workflow builder, a separate low-code layer may add little.1234

Problems it addresses

  • Processes run on spreadsheets and email1

Power Apps turns manual operations into apps that run in a browser and on phones and tablets.

  • Repetitive approvals and uploads2

Automated, instant and scheduled cloud flows connect apps and services through connectors.

  • Uncontrolled makers and data leaks4

Managed Environments add data policies, sharing limits, IP firewall and customer-managed keys.

  • External portals3

Power Pages hosts secure external websites on Dataverse, and a 30-day trial lets teams test before buying.

A typical workflow

  1. Set up environments4

Create environments in the Power Platform admin center and enable Managed Environments.

  2. Model shared data3

Store business data in Dataverse so apps, flows and sites share one model.

  3. Build the app1

Describe the solution with Plans in Power Apps, then refine it in Power Apps Studio or the model-driven app designer.

  4. Automate2

Create cloud flows with Copilot or start from a template in the designer.

  5. Add an agent5

Build agents in Copilot Studio, which is part of the Power Platform family.
