Accenture: rolling out Microsoft 365 Copilot to about 743,000 people

The challenge
Accenture wanted to put Microsoft 365 Copilot in the hands of a very large, dispersed workforce while keeping training, messaging, data governance and local regulatory controls consistent. At Avanade, sellers spent a long time researching clients before meetings.1
What was implemented
The deployment began in August 2023 with a pilot for a few hundred senior leaders and selected staff, which grew to about 20,000 users. During the pilot the company tightened its data strategy, data governance and access controls. The phased rollout used one-to-one training for leaders, group sessions, regular communications and peer support on Viva Engage, and a brand kit inside Copilot helps non-design teams produce on-brand material. Privacy and security controls let the company test features with small groups and switch off capabilities that conflict with local rules.
Copilot is used in Outlook, Teams and Word, and Avanade sellers share Copilot notebooks. Avanade built D3, a sales intelligence tool that profiles client businesses and uses Copilot for its conversational agent; it has reached 25% of Avanade sellers. Staff without technical backgrounds are building agents, though no count is published. Microsoft says the rollout is reaching around 743,000 people.12

What others can learn, and the limits
In our view, Accenture offers the most detailed public playbook for a very large rollout: leaders first, governance fixed during the pilot, a peer community, and tranches rather than one big switch-on. The speed and productivity figures are self-reported and come from Accenture and Microsoft; SiliconANGLE notes they are not independently verified. The D3 comparison of users against non-users is a better kind of evidence, but it is early and lacks a stated sample. Smaller firms can copy the change-management pattern without the scale.
