A Leader Focused on Purpose and Progress

Jason Markusen has spent much of his life thinking about leadership. Not the kind that sits in a title or a job description. The kind that shows up in daily habits, team culture, and the way people motivate others.

Today, Markusen is the Owner and CEO of Energized 4 Life, an online business built around personal growth, motivation, and leadership development. But the road to building that platform was shaped by many years of experience bringing ideas to life.

“I’ve always been drawn to building things,” Markusen says. “Whether it’s a team, a project, or a business, I enjoy taking an idea and turning it into something real.”

His career reflects that mindset. Each chapter added a new lesson about leadership, organization, and the power of a strong culture.

Growing Up in Park River, North Dakota

Jason Markusen grew up in Park River, North Dakota, a small community where relationships and work ethic mattered.

He describes his childhood as simple and supportive. Those early experiences shaped how he thinks about teamwork and responsibility today.

One unusual moment from his youth still stands out. At the age of 13, Markusen won a car in a local promotion. The story was even covered in a local newspaper.

“It was definitely one of those moments that people still bring up,” he says with a laugh. “Not many kids can say they won a car before they could drive it.”

While it was a fun memory, sports and music were bigger influences during those years. They gave him early exposure to teamwork, performance, and discipline.

Those interests would continue to play a major role in his life.

Education Built on Leadership and Discipline

After graduating high school with honors in 1992, Markusen attended the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks.

He studied Elementary Education with a coaching minor and graduated summa cum laude in 1998.

He later continued his studies at North Dakota State University, where he earned both a Master’s degree (MEd) and an Educational Specialist degree (EdS) in Educational Leadership. He completed graduate school with a 4.0 GPA.

Looking back, Markusen says those years taught him the importance of structure and preparation.

“Education taught me a lot about organization and leadership,” he explains. “When you’re responsible for helping others grow, you quickly learn that mindset and culture matter.”

Those ideas would eventually influence how he approached business and entrepreneurship.

    Exploring Entrepreneurship and New Ideas

Over time, Markusen became increasingly interested in entrepreneurship and building projects outside traditional career paths.

One early venture involved working with a small team to help develop Quiver, an app designed to provide practical tools that could be used in different environments.

“It was exciting to be part of a team creating something new,” he says. “You learn quickly how collaboration and problem-solving drive innovation.”

He also launched businesses such as You Matter Marketing and Top Gun Leadership, ventures that focused on communication, leadership, and personal development.

Although Markusen is no longer actively working in those projects, he says they played an important role in shaping his approach to leadership.

“Every business you build teaches you something,” he says. “Sometimes the biggest lesson is how to stay focused on your long-term vision.”

Energized 4 Life: A Focus on Leadership and Growth

Today, Markusen’s main focus is Energized 4 Life, the online business he founded to share ideas around leadership, motivation, and growth.

Through this platform, he explores topics such as positive culture, team building, organization, and mindset.

For Markusen, the concept behind the business is simple: people perform better when they feel energized about their goals.

“I believe people do their best work when they feel inspired,” he says. “Energy, attitude, and leadership all go together.”

He sees leadership not just as a professional skill but as something that affects every area of life.

“Leadership shows up everywhere,” he explains. “In business, in families, in sports teams. It’s really about helping people believe in what’s possible.”

Sports, Music, and Life Outside Work

Outside of business, Markusen has always stayed connected to sports and creativity.

He is a longtime fan of the Minnesota Vikings, Timberwolves, Wild, and Twins, and he enjoys both watching and coaching sports.

Travel is another important part of his life. He values spending time exploring new places with his three sons.

Music and dance have also been meaningful outlets over the years. Markusen spent more than 10 years participating in and teaching ballroom dancing, an experience that helped him build confidence and connect with others.

“Dance taught me a lot about discipline and creativity,” he says. “It also reminds you that learning new things keeps life interesting.”

    Building a Life Around Leadership

Looking ahead, Markusen continues to focus on growing Energized 4 Life and sharing ideas that encourage people to stay motivated and organized.

He believes the most valuable lessons often come from real-world experience.

“Success rarely happens overnight,” he says. “Most of the time it comes from staying consistent, learning from setbacks, and continuing to move forward.”

For Markusen, leadership is not about perfection. It is about progress.

“At the end of the day, I just want to help people realize they’re capable of more than they think,” he says. “When people start believing that, a lot of good things can happen.”
