KPMG: rebuilding the Digital Gateway data layer on Microsoft Fabric

KPMG · Professional services · Global (138 countries and territories)

The challenge

Digital Gateway is the platform where KPMG professionals and clients plan, exchange and analyze work in a secure environment. Its data was spread across many tools, and onboarding a client meant tickets, handoffs and moving files by hand, so teams could wait a couple of days before they could start working with the data.1

What was implemented

KPMG moved the Digital Gateway data warehouse and analytics layer onto Microsoft Fabric, using workspace isolation and central policy enforcement. It worked with Microsoft to validate outbound access protection, which limits where data can be written, and made workspace provisioning self-service through automation and platform APIs. The story also names Power BI, Azure Synapse Analytics, Azure SQL, Azure Data Factory and Excel in the wider environment.

Microsoft describes the results as early signals while the global rollout continues.1

Reported outcomes

  • about 2 hours instead of about 16 (87% less)

Time to onboard client data and provision an environment (early result during the global rollout)12

    Measured
  • at least 25%

Reduction in IT operational effort, as estimated by KPMG's IT team (the Microsoft blog drops the words at least)12

    Projected, not measured

What others can learn, and the limits

In our view, firms that host client data can learn from how KPMG paired self-service workspace provisioning with strict outbound controls, so faster onboarding did not loosen data protection. Both sources are Microsoft pages and the results are early, with the effort figure an internal estimate. Organizations whose analytics already sit in one warehouse with automated provisioning may not need a platform move to get similar onboarding times.
