Microsoft Dragon Copilot
Microsoft Dragon Copilot is an AI clinical assistant that captures patient conversations and dictation and drafts notes, orders and other documentation for clinician review. It offers role-based experiences for physicians, nurses and radiologists, EHR embedding and partner AI apps and agents.1
Also known as Dragon Copilot
- Intended for
- Physicians, Nurses, Radiologists, Health system IT and clinical informatics teams, EHR vendors and health software partners
- Runs on
- SaaS, Web browser, Desktop app, Mobile app, Embedded in EHR applications
At a glance
- What is it?
- Dragon Copilot is Microsoft's AI assistant for clinical documentation. Microsoft says it combines its conversational and ambient AI with generative AI. It captures the clinical encounter (ambient capture) or dictation, drafts notes and discrete data such as orders and conditions for the clinician's review, and answers clinical questions with citations to transcripts, notes and trusted references. There are experiences for physicians, nurses and radiologists, offered as web, desktop and mobile apps or embedded in an electronic health record (EHR) such as Epic. Administrators manage it in the Dragon admin center.123
- What does it do?
- For physicians it turns multi-party, multilingual conversations into specialty-specific draft notes and suggests orders, coding, referral letters and after-visit summaries. For nurses it turns bedside observations into structured flowsheet entries, for example in Epic Rover. For radiologists, a desktop companion to PowerScribe One summarizes prior reports and drafts impressions. Partners embed Dragon Copilot in EHRs with the Dragon Copilot Developer Kit and publish AI apps and agents that receive patient context, transcripts and notes and return cards inside Dragon Copilot.145
- Who needs it?
- Health systems and clinics where documentation load takes clinician time, EHR vendors and health software partners that want to embed ambient documentation, and partners that want to offer clinical AI apps inside the clinician workflow. Availability differs by role and country, so check the list for your market.
- What does it need?2
- Dragon Copilot licenses and users managed through the Microsoft 365 admin center and Dragon admin center
- A supported country for the chosen role (physicians, nurses, radiologists)
- For embedded use: an EHR with a Dragon Copilot integration and a separate contract with the EHR vendor
- A patient consent process for recording encounters
- For radiologists: PowerScribe One
- What it is not
- Dragon Copilot drafts documentation; the clinician reviews it, and patient consent is needed before recording. It does not replace clinical judgment. In the standalone apps, users transfer finished notes into the EHR themselves; only embedded integrations deliver content straight into the EHR, and then the EHR vendor supports the workflow. Microsoft does not provide or resell EHR services. The radiologist experience is a US preview, and AI apps and agents are limited to partners selling to US customers.124
Availability and licensing. Checked 26 Oct 2026 on Microsoft's product page: physicians in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Ireland, France, Germany, Austria, Belgium, Netherlands and Switzerland; nurses in the United States (generally available from December 2025 per Microsoft's October 2025 blog); radiologists in the United States, in preview. AI apps and agents: partners selling to US customers only. No prices were shown on the pages checked.1
The problem it solves
Clinical documentation competes with time for patients and often spills past clinic hours. Dictation helps, but clinicians still have to structure notes, enter orders, code visits and write follow-up letters.
Dragon Copilot records the encounter with consent, drafts the note and related documents and surfaces relevant information while the clinician documents. Embedding it in the EHR keeps the work inside the system clinicians already use.
How it works
- Capture: ambient recording of the encounter, or dictation, from the Dragon Copilot apps or from inside the EHR mobile or desktop app.
- Generation: AI drafts the clinical note and discrete data such as orders, conditions and flowsheet entries for review.
- Information guidance: summarized answers from trusted internal and external sources, with citations.
- Integration: the Dragon Copilot Developer Kit (SDK for JavaScript, Dragon Copilot SDK for Android, DAXKit SDK for iOS, embedded web apps for desktop and mobile, and partner APIs) embeds the workflow in EHRs.
- Extensions: AI apps and agents receive patient context (FHIR R4 Patient, Encounter and Condition data), audio turns, the transcript and the note, and return adaptive cards; customers authorize data access in the Dragon admin center.
- Administration: the Dragon admin center, alongside the Microsoft 365 admin center, provisions users, links EHR instances and applies settings by organization hierarchy.234

Capabilities
Ambient and dictated documentation for physicians2
Captures conversations and dictation and drafts specialty-specific notes plus recommendations for orders, conditions and other discrete data.
Why it matters: Reduces manual note writing and data entry after visits.
Limits: Drafts need clinician review; patient consent is required before recording.
Nursing documentation16
Turns bedside observations into structured flowsheet entries in EHR mobile apps such as Epic Rover, plus nurse notes.
Why it matters: Moves charting closer to the bedside.
Limits: Available for nurses in the United States only; Microsoft announced general availability from December 2025.
Radiology companion1
A desktop companion integrated with PowerScribe One that summarizes prior reports, suggests report improvements and drafts impressions.
Why it matters: Supports report creation for radiologists.
Limits: United States only, in preview.
EHR embedding with the Developer Kit2
SDKs and partner APIs let EHR vendors capture recordings and deliver generated content inside their own apps.
Why it matters: Clinicians stay in the EHR; no manual transfer of notes.
Limits: The EHR vendor supports embedded workflows, and customers need a separate contract with the EHR vendor.
Partner AI apps and agents46
Extensions receive encounter context and return structured cards with actions inside Dragon Copilot; they are offered through Microsoft Marketplace.
Why it matters: Brings third-party tools such as clinical references or prior authorization into the documentation workflow.
Limits: Limited to partners selling to US customers; customers must authorize patient data access.
Administration in Dragon admin center3
Provisioning, EHR instance linking and settings by organization hierarchy, with licenses and users managed together with the Microsoft 365 admin center.
Why it matters: Gives IT one place to manage Dragon Copilot at scale.
Limits: Embedded EHR settings depend on each EHR integration.
Conversation data in Microsoft Fabric7
A documented integration brings conversational data from Dragon Ambient eXperience (DAX) Copilot into Fabric OneLake for analytics.
Why it matters: Lets health systems analyze documentation data alongside other records.
Limits: Microsoft documents it under the DAX Copilot name; health data in analytics needs strict governance.
