Face HIIT® and the Science Behind Why Your Face Needs Exercise Too

Most people train their bodies and ignore their faces. That gap shows up over time.

Skin loses firmness. Features shift downward. Lines stick around longer. The usual response is creams or injections. But if you know anatomy, you know that no cream or at home facial tool, nor even medspa topical procedures, will ever lift your face or neck – not for long.

Because skin follows structure.

If you lose volume in your glutes, and your skin starts to droop and sag – would you run a cream or a gua sha tool or microneedling roller over them and expect them to lift?

Of course not. We’ve been educated that the solution for muscle loss and sagging skin is to get to the gym or do at home workouts that rebuild the muscle. The skin will fill out, and lift again.

But the beauty industry is deeply committed to keeping you in the dark about the fact that your face and neck respond similarly to exercise.

After all, they can’t sell you a $200 cream again and again if you realize it’s never going to sharpen your jawline, or sculpt your neck.

Face HIIT sits at the center of this conversation. Created by anatomy expert Sadie Nardini, the method focuses on strengthening facial muscles and releasing tension patterns that shape facial aging.

With decades spent teaching movement and anatomy under her belt, she built Face HIIT® after noticing rapid changes in her own face and neck in her 40s and testing ways to reverse them. The result is a system that treats the face like any other muscle group, train it or lose it.

The Face Has Muscles. They Age Like the Rest of You.

There are over 40 muscles in the face. They control expressions, support skin, and help maintain structure. Unlike larger muscles in the body, many facial muscles attach directly to the skin. That means when they weaken or tighten unevenly, the surface changes fast.

Research shows that starting in your mid-30s, muscle mass declines by about 3–8% per decade. That process, called sarcopenia, doesn’t skip the face. When facial muscles lose tone, they shrink and flatten. The skin has less underlying support, which leads to sagging.

Fat pads also shift with age. Combined with weaker muscles, this creates hollow areas and drooping. Collagen loss adds another layer. By age 50, most people have lost about 20–30% of their collagen. Skin becomes thinner and less elastic.

The result is not just “skin aging.” It’s structural aging.

But – science also says that this muscle and collagen loss isn’t inevitable. Women who start a fitness and strength training routine can counteract that 3-8% decline of non-exercisers, and even gain muscle mass.

Studies show that women who practice collagen boosting skincare and lifestyle intervention can radically slow the loss of collagen experienced by women who do not focus on collagen synthesis, and they can even synthesize new collagen and elastin.

This starts to make clear that aging isn’t just an unavoidable decline.

It’s often a lack of the right fitness, nutrition, and self care masquerading as aging.

Sadie calls this “accelerated aging,” and her clients experience for themselves how much power they have over it.

Why Skin-Only Solutions Fall Short

Most anti-aging routines focus on the surface. Serums aim to boost collagen. Moisturizers protect the barrier. These matter, but they don’t address what’s happening underneath.

Think of it like a mattress. If the springs collapse, changing the sheets won’t fix the shape.

Sadie Nardini explains it in practical terms:

“I had a student who spent thousands on skincare and still felt like her face looked saggy and tired. When we started working on her cheek muscles, she said, ‘Wait, my face actually feels lifted from inside.’ That’s when it clicked for her. She wasn’t just smoothing skin, she was rebuilding support.”

That shift—from surface to structure—is where Face HIIT® comes in.

Fast-Twitch Muscles: The Missing Piece

Here’s where Face HIIT® stands out. Unlike facial yoga styles, stretches or other myofascial techniques, It focuses on fast-twitch muscle fibers. These are responsible for quick, powerful movements. They also decline faster with age than slow-twitch fibers.

And, importantly – they are the ones that lift, tighten, and hug muscles, attached connective tissues, and skin.

Most facial routines use slow, repetitive movements. They stretch and hold, or just stretch and massage. That can improve awareness, it can increase circulation and hydration and relax muscles, but it doesn’t fully activate fast-twitch fibers.

Face HIIT® (high intensity interval training) is the gold standard for activating fast twitch muscles and rebuilding muscle volume in less time. HIIT uses short bursts of movement but intensely. Think quick contractions, controlled pulses, and targeted engagement. The goal is to rebuild lost strength and volume in the muscles that give the face lift and shape.

Sadie Nardini shares a specific example:

“When I first tested this on myself, I worked one side of my face with faster contractions and did the other side with slower, and longer durations. After four weeks, the trained side looked fuller,  higher and smoother. It wasn’t subtle. That’s when I knew speed and style mattered.”

Studies back this up. In one study, Face Yoga took 20 weeks doing 30 minutes of exercise to create only moderate changes in facial structure. High Intensity Workouts took 4 weeks with workouts of much shorter durations – averaging 4 minutes –  to create “noticeable” change.

We know HIIT works below the neck. And face and neck muscles don’t just magically stop responding to exercise above the collarbones.

Tension Is Aging You Faster Than You Think

Strength is only half the story. Tension is the other half.

Facial muscles hold patterns. Squinting, frowning, clenching—these add up. Over time, they create fixed lines. The muscle stays shortened. The skin folds along those lines again and again.

Studies on facial expression patterns show that repeated movements contribute to wrinkle formation. Eye wrinkles, forehead and eyebrow lines, nasolabial and marionette lines, neck ropes and sagging jowls. These are not just aging. They’re coming from tension.

The big issue, and one with many ‘skinfluencers’ online who haven’t been properly trained in the complexities of facial anatomy, is that you can’t release deeper muscle fascia (the webbing inside and around muscles – and the stuff that really creates this face and neck tension) –  by pulling on the skin.

In fact, skin-pulling or scraping massages and tools can damage collagen and elastin fibers and skin can sag worse.

Face HIIT® pairs HIIT exercise with targeted, skin-safer myofascial release. This involves gentle but deep myofascial (muscle-fascia) release and remolding techniques to relax tight areas and restore balance.

Sadie Nardini describes a common case:

“One woman came in with pronounced neck ropes and saggy skin. She thought it was just aging. She even told me ‘It’s genetic – every women in my family has a turkey neck.’ 3 months later, it was gone, and she’s kept it gone.

When we worked on releasing that area, she realized how tight her neck muscle called the platysma was. It was dragging her neck skin down and trapping fluid. Once she learned how to relax it, she rewrote her ‘genetics’ – with one simple 4 minute release technique.”

This combination, the optimal strength plus release type for your face and neck, is powerful.

What Results Look Like

Facial exercise is not instant. It follows the same rules as body training. Consistency drives change.

Actual clients doing the Face HIIT® programs report changes like:

  • Lifted cheeks
  • Reduced the appearance of lines and wrinkles
  • Often, lines and wrinkles are erased
  • A smoother neck and sharper jawline
  • Wider, firmer eyes
  • More even facial symmetry
  • A defined jawline

And more.

It’s transformative what the right kind of facial fitness can do.

A Daily System That Fits Real Life

One reason facial exercises work is their accessibility. No equipment. No appointments. Just 10 minutes a day until women need them less.

Sadie Nardini keeps the approach simple:

“I tell people to treat it like brushing their teeth or going to the gym. You don’t skip that for weeks and expect things to stay the same. Your face needs the same regular attention.”

That mindset turns facial care into a habit, not a one-time fix.

The Bigger Shift

The idea behind Face HIIT® reflects a broader shift in how people think about aging. It moves away from quick fixes and toward function.

Instead of asking, “How do I cover this up?” the question becomes, “How do I support what’s underneath to change what’s on the surface?”

Facial muscles are part of the body. They respond to training. They weaken without use. They hold tension. Ignoring them doesn’t stop aging. It just leaves a major factor unaddressed.

So What Does This Mean for Your Face?

Your face is not separate from your body. It follows the same biological rules. Muscles shrink without use. Tension builds with repetition. Skin pulls into lines or sags with muscle dysfunction. Structure changes over time and requires attention to reverse the process.

Face HIIT® offers a simple, accessible and empowering framework that treats the face like a system. Train the muscles. Release the tension. Support the skin.

The idea is simple. If movement shapes your body, it can shape your face too.

And, according to Sadie and the 75,000 women currently doing her programs, and her 2 million strong community online –

It does.
