Microsoft Copilot Surges as ChatGPT’s Market Share Declines in 2025

The AI chatbot landscape is witnessing a major shift in 2025, as new competitors enter the market and existing players scramble to maintain their foothold. While OpenAI’s ChatGPT remains the dominant player in the AI chatbot space, recent data reveals a significant decline in its market share.

ChatGPT, which for over two years held an undisputed position as the leader in the AI chatbot market, is now seeing a gradual erosion of its dominance. Recent data from Statcounter, compiled by Stocklytics.com, shows that ChatGPT’s market share dropped by nearly 5% over a two-month period. The share fell from 84.21% in April to 79.86% in June 2025, marking a notable 4.35-point decline.

Despite this drop, ChatGPT still holds the largest portion of the market, but the rapid rise of competitors signals a potential shift in the AI chatbot race.

Microsoft Copilot Takes the Lead

One of the most notable developments in the chatbot market is the rapid ascent of Microsoft Copilot. While Microsoft Copilot was already integrated into Microsoft 365 tools such as Windows, Office, Outlook, Excel, and Teams, its influence has only increased following the “Copilot Plus” update.

The seamless integration of Copilot into widely-used Microsoft products has given it a significant edge, making it more accessible to both individuals and businesses.

According to the Statcounter data, Microsoft Copilot’s market share surged by 4.6 points, reaching 4.83% in June 2025. This rise is largely attributed to Copilot’s ease of use and integration within the Microsoft ecosystem, which already has a vast user base. The data suggests that as more businesses adopt Microsoft 365 tools, Copilot’s user base continues to grow steadily.

DeepSeek and Other Competitors in the Spotlight

While Microsoft Copilot is taking significant market share, it’s not the only competitor impacting ChatGPT’s lead. The entry of DeepSeek, a new player launched in January 2025, has also caused ripples in the AI chatbot industry. DeepSeek quickly gained traction, leading to updates from OpenAI and accelerated efforts from Google’s Gemini. Despite this, DeepSeek’s market share remains relatively small, holding 1.02% as of June 2025.

Perplexity, another established competitor, saw a slight decline in its market share, slipping from 12% to 11% during the same period. Google’s Gemini, although gaining momentum, experienced only a marginal decline, falling by just 0.12 points to 2.19%. These changes indicate that while other players are gaining some traction, Microsoft Copilot is the most significant threat to ChatGPT’s reign.

Regional Market Trends

The impact of competition is not uniform across the globe. Statcounter’s regional analysis reveals that ChatGPT has faced its most significant decline in the United States, where it lost 10.12% of its market share between April and June 2025. Over the same period, Microsoft Copilot gained 10.68%, highlighting a clear shift in the preferences of American users.

In Europe, ChatGPT also experienced a notable drop, losing nearly 6% of its market share, while Copilot gained over 7%. However, Asia has proven to be more resilient for ChatGPT. While it did experience a decline of 2.5%, the chatbot’s position in the region remains relatively strong compared to other areas.

The Road Ahead

The rapid evolution of the AI chatbot market indicates that 2025 could be a pivotal year for both OpenAI and its competitors. While ChatGPT continues to lead, it faces growing competition from Microsoft Copilot, which has effectively integrated into Microsoft’s widespread tools and services.

The rise of new entrants like DeepSeek, as well as the consistent updates and improvements made by Google’s Gemini, show that the AI chatbot race is far from over. OpenAI, Microsoft, Google, and other emerging players are likely to continue evolving their products, making the coming months crucial in determining who will dominate the chatbot space.

As the market becomes more competitive, users will continue to have more choices and may favour platforms that offer seamless integrations, superior functionality, and strong user bases. In the near future, it will be interesting to see whether ChatGPT can maintain its lead or if Microsoft Copilot will push it further into second place.
