2U Puts edX Inside ChatGPT, Targeting the New Starting Point for Education Discovery

A new app integration brings edX’s catalog of more than 5,300 university programs directly into ChatGPT conversations for learners who’ve already made AI their starting point for figuring out what to learn next

ChatGPT surpassed 800 million weekly active users by late 2025, and a growing share of those conversations involve questions about skills, careers, and what to learn next. 2U announced the launch of the edX app in the ChatGPT app store, which places edX’s catalog of more than 5,300 programs from the world’s leading universities and institutions directly inside ChatGPT conversations.

Users can describe their goals in plain language and receive program recommendations, side-by-side comparisons, and schedule-matched options, all drawn from edX’s catalog without leaving the ChatGPT interface. It’s available now to all logged-in ChatGPT users on Free, Plus, and Pro plans. The app launches with English-language support.

Where Education Search Now Begins

By the time a prospective learner reaches a university program page, their thinking has already been shaped. AI-generated summaries, peer forum discussions, and outcomes data pulled from across the web have framed their perspective before they click anything. For education marketers, visibility in those earlier AI conversations has become as important as organic search ranking.

“The way learners discover education programs has fundamentally changed. By the time someone reaches a program page, their perspective is shaped by AI-generated summaries, peer discussions, and outcomes data. At 2U, we’ve built our marketing infrastructure around that reality, using AI to better understand learner intent, surface the right programs earlier in the journey, and connect people with opportunities that fit their goals. Integrating edX with ChatGPT is a natural extension of that work, helping our university and industry partners reach learners with greater visibility and higher-quality engagement.” — Meghan Rodgers, Chief Marketing Officer, 2U

The edX app was built specifically for that earlier stage of the search. A user asking ChatGPT about transitioning into a data role, or wondering which AI skills matter most for product managers, can now receive program recommendations from edX’s catalog as part of that conversation, before they’ve opened a browser tab or typed a keyword into Google.

What the App Does

The integration covers four distinct use cases, each designed around the kinds of open-ended questions learners bring to an AI conversation rather than the keyword-based queries that drive traditional search.

Goal-oriented search takes plain-language descriptions of professional objectives and returns relevant program recommendations from edX’s catalog. A user might specify a target skill, a career transition, or a gap they need to close, and receive matched options from the more than 250 universities and industry organizations that deliver programs through edX.

Program comparison generates side-by-side breakdowns across time commitment, cost, and learning outcomes for programs a user is evaluating. Schedule-based filtering surfaces programs based on available hours per week or a defined completion window. That addresses one of the most common friction points in adult learner decision-making. Skills gap identification takes a target role as input and returns the specific edX courses that address the qualifications required to get there.

The catalog those capabilities draw on spans executive education, professional certificates, MicroMasters programs, degree programs, and open courses across business, technology, and healthcare.

The Credentialing Argument

The integration carries a second argument beyond distribution. As AI tools lower the barrier to generating educational content, the gap between a certificate from a top-tier university and a self-assembled skills program continues to grow. Where a learner finds a program shapes how much credibility they give it.

“AI is not only changing how we work, but also which skills matter and how fast they evolve. With the edX app now in ChatGPT, learners can find programs from our trusted universities and industry partners right when they’re ready to build the skills that matter most. In a world where AI is creating an explosion of learning content, deep, credentialled learning, guidance, and credibility set the best programs apart — and that’s what edX delivers.” — Anant Agarwal, Chief Academic Officer, 2U and Founder of edX

edX’s global learner network, which has grown to more than 100 million people through partnerships with institutions including Harvard, MIT, and Oxford, is what 2U is positioning inside ChatGPT. The catalog’s scale and the institutional names behind it are the core of the commercial case: credentialed programs, surfaced at the moment someone decides to act.

Context: The ChatGPT App Store

OpenAI launched its app store in December 2025, and gave third-party developers a directory inside ChatGPT to submit integrations for review. It’s attracted more than 300 apps since launch. The announcement makes edX one of the few major education platforms to have secured placement in the store.

Whether it’ll develop into a consistent enrollment driver remains an open question. The channel is new and usage patterns are still forming. Education, with its high search intent and extended decision cycles, may be among the more natural fits. For 2U’s university partners, the integration represents access to a distribution channel built around how people actually ask questions in AI: through open-ended conversation.

Both the edX app and the broader catalog are available at edx.org.
