Visual Studio Code and Visual Studio 2026
Microsoft's two code tools: Visual Studio Code, an open source editor for macOS, Windows, Linux and the web with built-in AI agents, and Visual Studio 2026, a full IDE for Windows aimed at .NET, C++ and game development. Both use GitHub Copilot, bring-your-own-key models and MCP servers for AI features.12
Also known as VS Code, Visual Studio
- Intended for
- Application developers, Windows, .NET and C++ developers, Game developers, Students and open source contributors
- Runs on
- Desktop on Windows, macOS and Linux (VS Code), Web browser (VS Code for the web), Desktop on Windows 11 and Windows Server (Visual Studio 2026), Windows 365 Cloud PCs (Visual Studio minimum 2 vCPU and 8 GB RAM)2
At a glance
- What is it?
- Visual Studio Code is an open source, cross-platform code editor with an extension marketplace (its site lists more than 80,000 extensions) and a web version for quick edits on GitHub and Azure Repos. Visual Studio 2026 is Microsoft's full IDE for 64-bit Windows 11 and Windows Server, sold as Community, Professional and Enterprise editions, with support for .NET 10, C# 14, modern C++ and Unity and Unreal projects. Its October Update 18.11.0 shipped on 13 Oct 2026 and servicing release 18.11.2 on 25 Oct 2026. Visual Studio for Mac retired on 31 Aug 2024.1345
- What does it do?
- In VS Code, agents find code, edit files and run checks; the Chat view handles work in an open project and the Agents window manages sessions across projects. VS Code supports a Copilot harness (recommended) plus Anthropic Claude and OpenAI Codex harnesses, with models from a GitHub Copilot plan, your own API key or a local model. Visual Studio 2026 adds a Copilot chat built on the Copilot SDK, an agent (preview), a Git agent that reviews changes and pull requests, bring-your-own-key (preview) for Microsoft Foundry, OpenAI, Anthropic and Ollama, and MCP servers with trust checks.46
- Who needs it?
- Developers choosing an editor or IDE. VS Code suits cross-platform and web work and teams that want to try several AI harnesses. Visual Studio suits Windows-centric .NET, C++, desktop and game development that needs a full debugger, designers and installable workloads. Visual Studio Community is free for individual developers, classroom learning, academic research, open source work and non-enterprise organizations with up to 5 users.5
- What does it need?2
- VS Code: macOS, Windows or Linux, or the web version
- Visual Studio 2026: 64-bit Windows 11 or Windows Server 2019, 2022 or 2025 on x64 or Arm64, at least 4 GB RAM (16 GB recommended) and 2.5 GB to 210 GB of disk depending on workloads
- A GitHub account and a GitHub Copilot plan for plan-based models, or your own model API key
- A Visual Studio Professional or Enterprise license unless the Community terms apply
- What it is not
- VS Code is not a smaller version of Visual Studio; they are separate products, and Visual Studio runs only on Windows. A Visual Studio license does not by itself provide AI models: plan-based model access comes from a GitHub Copilot plan, or you bring your own model keys. Community use is limited to the listed cases; Microsoft treats organizations with more than 250 PCs or more than $1 million USD in annual revenue as enterprises. Visual Studio is not supported on shared multi-user virtual desktop hosts.256
Availability and licensing. Checked 26 Oct 2026. VS Code is open source; its site offers free AI agent use with a GitHub account and no credit card. Visual Studio 2026 Community is free for individuals, academic use, open source and non-enterprise organizations up to 5 users; Professional and Enterprise are paid, with free trials. Microsoft Lifecycle lists Visual Studio 2026 under the Modern Lifecycle Policy with a start date of 11 Nov 2025 and a retirement date of 10 Nov 2027.137
The problem it solves
Developers move between writing code, debugging, testing, source control and now directing AI agents. Separate tools for each step cost time, and AI help that cannot see the workspace gives generic answers.
Microsoft offers two tools for this. VS Code is a light editor that runs on every major desktop OS and in the browser, with agent sessions in the editor and in a separate Agents window. Visual Studio 2026 is the full Windows IDE for large .NET and C++ solutions, with Copilot chat, an agent and Git tools inside the IDE.
How it works
VS Code groups AI work into sessions. A harness connects a model to tools and manages the session. Local agents run in your workspace, cloud agents return pull requests and remote sessions offer browser access. Model hosting and tool execution are separate choices, limited by the harness, the account and organization policy. Behavior can be customized with MCP servers, project instructions, agent skills, plugins, custom agents, hooks and prompt files.
Visual Studio 2026 installs by workload on 64-bit Windows 11 (including Arm64) or Windows Server 2019, 2022 or 2025. AI features come through the GitHub Copilot component: a chat built on the Copilot SDK, the agent (preview), a Git agent, organization-level custom agents, and MCP servers, including Git provider servers for GitHub and Azure DevOps. Visual Studio detects changes to an MCP server configuration and asks for re-approval before running it.46

Capabilities
Agent sessions in VS Code6
Agents find code, make edits and run checks; the Chat view works in an open project and the Agents window manages sessions across projects.
Why it matters: Lets a developer delegate multi-file tasks and keep several sessions organized.
Limits: Available options depend on the harness, the account and organization policies.
Multiple harnesses and model sources16
Copilot harness (recommended), Anthropic Claude and OpenAI Codex harnesses; models from a Copilot plan, bring-your-own-key or a supported local model.
Why it matters: Teams can compare providers without changing editors.
Limits: Plan-based models require a GitHub Copilot plan; other providers need their own keys or local hardware.
Extensions and web editor1
An Extension Marketplace with more than 80,000 extensions, and a web version for quick edits on GitHub and Azure Repos.
Why it matters: Covers most languages and tools from one editor.
Limits: The web version is meant for quick edits rather than full local development.
Copilot in Visual Studio 20264
A new Copilot chat built on the Copilot SDK (18.11), an agent built on the same SDK as the Copilot CLI (preview, 18.8), a Git agent for changes and pull requests, and selectable thinking effort.
Why it matters: Brings agent help into large Windows solutions without leaving the IDE.
Limits: The agent is in preview, and the new chat must be turned on under Tools > Options > GitHub > Copilot.
Bring-your-own-key and MCP in Visual Studio4
Bring-your-own-key (preview, 18.10) for Microsoft Foundry, OpenAI, Anthropic and Ollama; Git provider MCP servers for GitHub and Azure DevOps; MCP trust validation (18.7).
Why it matters: Lets organizations use approved model deployments and pull request context.
Limits: Bring-your-own-key is in preview.
Editions and lifecycle27
Community, Professional and Enterprise editions plus Build Tools, under the Modern Lifecycle Policy.
Why it matters: Clarifies who may use the free edition and how long a release is supported.
Limits: Community and Team Explorer get no Extended Support; on Arm64, workloads such as Azure development, Python and Office/SharePoint development are not supported.

Getting started
Pick the tool
Use VS Code for cross-platform or web work and Visual Studio 2026 for Windows .NET, C++ and game projects. Check whether the Community terms fit your organization.
Check: The installer you download matches your OS and licensed edition.
Install only the workloads you need
Visual Studio installs by workload; typical installations need 20 to 50 GB of free space.
Check: A sample project in your stack builds and runs.
Sign in for AI features
Sign in with a GitHub account that has a Copilot plan, or configure your own model provider key.
Check: The Chat view in VS Code or Copilot Chat in Visual Studio answers a question about your code.
Add MCP servers deliberately
Connect only the MCP servers you need, such as GitHub or Azure DevOps; Visual Studio asks for re-approval when a server configuration changes.
Check: The server tools appear in agent mode and you have approved each one.
