Success in law is often measured by outcomes, hours, and credentials. Jane Coogan measures it differently. For her, leadership comes from steadiness. From listening well. From showing up, day after day, for clients, family, and community.
As a Partner at Coogan Smith, LLP in Attleboro, Massachusetts, Jane has built a career grounded in trust and long-term thinking. Her path to leadership did not follow shortcuts. It followed discipline, patience, and a deep understanding of people.

Growing Up with Focus and Perspective
Jane grew up in Attleboro as the youngest of five children. From an early age, she learned how to observe, listen, and hold her own. At Bishop Feehan High School, she ran cross country and track. Distance running shaped her mindset.
“Running taught me pace,” she says. “You can’t rush everything. You have to know when to push and when to hold steady.”
That lesson would stay with her. It carried into her education and later into her career.
Jane earned a BA in English from the College of the Holy Cross. She then attended Villanova University School of Law, where she completed both her JD and an LLM in Taxation. The combination gave her a strong foundation in communication and complex problem-solving.
Learning the Craft in a Demanding Environment
Jane began her legal career at Feingold and Edelblum, a small boutique firm in Hackensack, New Jersey. The work was demanding. The clients were often high-net-worth individuals and families dealing with complex estate and business matters.
“It was hands-on from day one,” she recalls. “You couldn’t hide behind layers of hierarchy. You had to know your work and explain it clearly.”
Those years shaped her approach. She learned that technical skill matters, but clarity matters just as much. So does empathy.
“You certainly need the knowledge base,” Jane says. “But empathy is probably one of the most important attributes for success. Clients are dealing with real stress. You have to understand that.”
Returning Home and Building Long-Term Trust
In 2014, Jane returned to Attleboro to join Coogan Smith, LLP. Coming home was intentional. She wanted to build a practice rooted in relationships and community.
Today, her work focuses on estate planning, business formation, succession planning, and probate administration. Much of it involves guiding clients through transitions. Some are expected. Others are not.
“My goal is to make things feel manageable,” she says. “If someone leaves a meeting feeling calmer and clearer, that matters.”
Jane’s leadership style is quiet but consistent. She prioritises preparation. She listens closely. She avoids unnecessary complexity.
“I measure success by outcomes and feedback,” she explains. “Not just whether the work is done, but how clients feel about the process.”
Leadership Beyond the Office
Jane’s influence extends beyond her firm. She serves on the boards of the Sturdy Memorial Hospital Foundation, the Attleboro YMCA, and the Friends of St. John the Evangelist School. She is also a former President of the Attleboro Area Bar Association.
Community involvement is not an add-on for her. It is part of how she defines leadership.
“These roles keep you grounded,” she says. “They remind you that your work connects to real people and real needs.”
Her peers often describe her as thoughtful and reliable. Someone who follows through. Someone who leads without seeking attention.
Redefining Balance and Success
Jane is also a mother of two daughters, ages nine and seven. Balancing career and family is not something she claims to have mastered. It is something she works at daily.
“It’s always a challenge,” she says. “But I try to stay present. When I’m at work, I focus on my clients. When I’m home, I focus on my children.”
That sense of presence shapes how she works. She avoids constant multitasking. She blocks time for focused work. She runs regularly to clear her head.
“Running helps me reset,” she says. “It’s where I think things through.”
She also believes in boundaries. Early in her career, she took on too much at once.
“I thought saying yes to everything was the right move,” she says. “It wasn’t. I learned that quality matters more than quantity.”
A Steady Model of Leadership
Jane credits her parents as major influences. Her father’s reputation as a caring attorney showed her what professionalism looks like in practice. Her mother’s encouragement shaped how she approaches family and balance.
“They both taught me that confidence and kindness can exist together,” she says.
Today, Jane Coogan’s career reflects that lesson. She leads without rushing. She listens before advising. She values consistency over flash.
Her story shows that leadership in law does not have to be loud or aggressive. It can be calm. It can be thoughtful. And it can be built one steady decision at a time.
