Grand Forks is experiencing a significant expansion in its nursing and medical technology programs, particularly through Lake Region State College (LRSC). This growth, spurred by increased demand following the COVID-19 pandemic, is strengthening the local healthcare workforce and offering new educational pathways for residents.

    Key Takeaways

    • Enrollment in nursing programs at Lake Region State College has seen a notable increase since the pandemic.
    • New allied health programs, supported by a substantial grant, are being introduced, including surgical technology and soon, laboratory technology.
    • LRSC continues to offer diverse training and educational opportunities through its TrainND program and a long-standing partnership with the Grand Forks Air Force Base.

    Post-Pandemic Enrollment Boom

Lake Region State College’s nursing program, in collaboration with Altru Health System, has witnessed a consistent surge in enrollment since the COVID-19 pandemic. This trend highlights a growing interest in healthcare careers and the ongoing need for skilled nursing professionals.

The college offers practical nursing and associate degree nursing programs in Grand Forks, with applications typically open from December through March. Currently, there is capacity for 16 students in each of these tracks within the Grand Forks location.

    Expansion of Allied Health Programs

Bolstered by a $1 million grant from the North Dakota University System, LRSC has launched an allied health program. This initiative aims to develop apprenticeship programs in partnership with Altru, leading to certificates and associate degrees in fields such as surgical technology, laboratory technology, respiratory therapy, and ultrasound/sonography.

In Grand Forks, the surgical technology program is already underway with six students enrolled in its inaugural year. Laboratory technology is slated to be offered soon, pending final approval, and the college is also exploring opportunities in radiology technology. Students in these programs typically engage in online theory classes and in-person labs.

    Diverse Educational Offerings

Beyond nursing and medical technology, LRSC maintains its established programs through TrainND and at the Grand Forks Air Force Base. TrainND, the college’s workforce training division, offers various training sessions annually, attracting hundreds of participants. These sessions range from general inter-office communication and management training to industry-specific courses.

The partnership with the Grand Forks Air Force Base, active since 1982, provides educational opportunities not only for military personnel and their dependents but also for non-military residents in the surrounding areas. While face-to-face class numbers have seen some decline at the base due to changing missions and reduced personnel, the programming remains strong and continues to be offered, with potential for growth.

Furthermore, LRSC collaborates with the University of North Dakota (UND) on the "Launch!" program, enabling local students to take courses that can later transfer to UND. The college also provides dual credit opportunities in partnership with Grand Forks Red River and Grand Forks Central high schools.
