Buzzvault to Tackle the Gender Gap in the Tech Industry Through its ‘buzzingfor50’ Initiative

Tackling gender diversity head-on, the team at buzzvault, the world’s first digital asset vault built on the blockchain, has launched #buzzingfor50 – a campaign to drive actionable change and accountability both in the business and the wider tech community.

To kick-start the initiative, 4 male and 4 female members of the buzzvault team attended a Geek Girls Meet Up event in London on 24th July focusing on ways businesses can overcome barriers and boost female entrepreneurship. CEO and Founder of buzzvault, Becky Downing openly shared her experiences securing investment for the business.

buzzvault has 50% female representation at an executive level but has a target to achieve this gender balance across the whole business by the end of2019.

To meet this goal, the business is changing the recruitment setup, producing job descriptions to appeal to the widest possible audiences and getting male advocates engaged. Buzzvault is also getting involved in grassroots initiatives to help women and young people enter the tech sector including Women Who CodeDriven Women, Beyond the Classroom and the Geek Girls Meet Up.

Becky Downing, CEO of buzzvault said: “A gender balanced business is a better business in every way but we can’t hire more women if there are no women pursuing careers in the sector. That’s why we’re getting behind initiatives such as Geek Girls. By attending these events we are actively working towards making a difference and learning from them to evoke change.

“We want to see men and women from other tech firms supporting and learning from these initiatives in the way we are. Disappointingly, buzzvault was the only business there with a balance of male and female representation.

“Along with attending the events, we are also creating opportunities to offer hands on experience working in a tech environment in junior and volunteer roles.

“While buzzvault can’t change the entire industry alone, we can lead by example and show how we’re taking real action to address gender diversity through our #buzzingfor50 campaign.”

Tommy Rae Jnr, Head of Brand adds: “As a young and emerging brand with a mission to simplify people’s lives at the times when it can be toughest, it’s important we start as we mean to continue and show that we live by our values. In this way we will build trust and integrity.

“There’s been a lot of talk about gender diversity but actions speak louder than words so we are participating in important events to help drive change and holding ourselves accountable. “

Buzzvault is on track to launch the world’s first hyper tailored home insurance policy in Q4 2018 based on a digital vault of customers’ home contents data, stored securely on the blockchain.

The company is fast-growing based in the heart of Soho that aims to bring the benefits of technology and data to the worlds of removals and home insurance.

Founder and CEO Becky Downing’s mission is simple – empower consumers through their own buzzvault – a secure digitised inventory of their home contents data, to make moving, cataloguing and protecting their possessions stress free.

buzzvault insurance will launch in 2018, backed by Munich Re Digital Partners, delivering home insurance cover based on each customer’s secure buzzvault of digitised contents data. It is also backed by White Mountains Insurance Group, one of the world’s largest investment groups.

Among the prizes and awards they have earned, buzzvault has been recognised as the the highly prestigious DIAmond Award at the Digital Insurance Agenda in Amsterdam in May 2018 as well as has secured awards in the Wayra London Accelerator 2013 and the Startup Bootcamp InsurTech 2016.

For instance, Becky Downing has won the Emerging Entrepreneur Award 2016 at WCIT and earned a Silver Medal at the Stevie Awards for Women in Business.
