Starting with a Vision
In 2016, Tasha Brown and Adrius King launched Certified Home Nursing Solutions in Maryland. Their idea was clear. They wanted to help seniors stay home longer while receiving care that respected not just medical needs, but also culture and personal identity.
“We saw our own family members get care that felt too clinical,” Brown said. “Nobody asked about their routines, their food, or their faith. We wanted to change that.”

Small Team, Big Goals
The company began with a handful of caregivers and a strong focus on personalised home care. Early progress came when they secured their licence for in-home services. That milestone opened the door to wider offerings and stronger community trust.
King remembered those first years. “We were doing scheduling, home visits, even training ourselves. It was exhausting, but we knew it mattered.”
Expanding Services
Growth came step by step. After home care, the team became a Developmental Disabilities Administration (DDA) provider. This let them support people with disabilities through residential services, day programs, job coaching, and respite care.
One example: a young client wanted to work but lacked support. The team created a small pilot programme with local businesses. “We paired him with a bakery owner willing to train him,” King said. “Now he’s not just working—he’s thriving.”
Today, with new locations in Baltimore City, Salisbury, Chester, and Whitemarsh, the company continues to expand access while maintaining its focus on quality and trust.
Everyday Adjustments
Care wasn’t always about big programmes. Often, it was about small shifts.
A retired teacher refused morning activities. Instead of insisting, the caregiver asked questions. They learned she valued quiet mornings for reading. Activities moved to the afternoon, and her engagement shot up.
In another home, a caregiver noticed the client avoided certain meals. After a kitchen-table chat, it became clear the food conflicted with her religious practices. The menu was adjusted, and she started eating again.
The Role of Culture
Maryland is diverse, and the team built training around cultural sensitivity. Caregivers were taught to notice details, ask questions, and respect customs.
One staff member recalled: “A client had a prayer space in the living room. We shifted our visits so we didn’t interrupt. It was a small change, but it showed respect. That’s how trust grows.”
Community as a Partner
Certified Home Nursing Solutions learned that personalised care works best with community involvement. Neighbours, employers, and local groups often made the difference.
One example was a client who loved gardening but could no longer manage her yard. A local community group set up a weekly visit. The client joined in, and her mood lifted.
“Care doesn’t stop at the front door,” King said. “Community is part of it.”
Looking Ahead
By 2030, one in five Americans will be over 65. The demand for personalised, culturally sensitive care will keep rising. For Brown and King, the goal remains the same: build services that honour the person first.
“It’s simple,” Brown said. “Ask, listen, and adjust. That’s the future of care.”
Interview with Certified Home Nursing Solutions
What was the spark that started your journey?
Brown: “It was family. We saw care that didn’t fit their lives. We wanted something better.”
What was your biggest early milestone?
King: “Getting licensed for in-home care. It was the foundation that let us grow.”
Can you share a moment when cultural sensitivity changed an outcome?
Brown: “Yes, a client avoided meals until we realised the food didn’t fit her religion. We changed the menu, and she started eating again.”
What’s one challenge you had to overcome?
King: “Growing too fast. We learned that quality must guide every step.”
How do you bring ideas to life?
Brown: “By listening. A bakery job programme started because a client said, ‘I want to work.’ We built around that.”
What advice would you give others in care?
King: “Sit down and talk. A kitchen conversation can tell you more than any form.”
