Charlotte Investment Executive Derek Copeland

Seasoned financial professional Derek Copeland was recently in Canton, Ohio, for events surrounding the 2026 Pro Football Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, a natural setting for someone whose career has brought him into the lives of more than 50 NFL players, including All-Pros and Hall of Famers. Yet the accomplishments that matter most to Copeland are found much closer to home.

Ask about his wife, Lori, or their four children, and his eyes light up. The couple has been married for 26 years, building a life that has moved through career changes, managing school calendars, planning family trips, attending sporting events and the daily work of raising children. Lori Copeland, a senior wealth adviser, has also built an accomplished professional life of her own.

Their older children are now beginning to chart their own paths. Their oldest daughter, Ava, is pre-med at the University of Florida, her father’s alma mater. Their oldest son, Lawson, a nationally ranked right-handed pitcher, recently signed to play baseball at New York University and attend business school. Each milestone carries the pride of seeing a child succeed, but Copeland is just as interested in who his children are becoming.

“For me, success goes beyond just financial gains,” Derek L. Copeland explained in a recent interview about his life and career.. “It involves nurturing meaningful relationships with family and friends and building a supportive network of trustworthy individuals.”

It is a notable distinction from someone who has spent much of his career in finance, wealth management and real estate investing. Copeland manages the day-to-day operations of Sentinel Grove Partners, a Charlotte, North Carolina-based investment firm focused on commercial real estate. His professional life is built around numbers, risk and long-term returns. His personal definition of success is far more human.

Building a Family Across 26 Years

A 26-year marriage cannot be reduced to a single lesson. It is built through ordinary days as much as major milestones, through the years when children need constant care and the later seasons when parents must learn how to guide without controlling.

Derek and Lori Copeland have navigated those changes while maintaining demanding careers and remaining closely involved in their children’s lives. That involvement has required more than simply being present for the big moments. It has meant paying attention to their children’s development, talking openly about decisions and passing along lessons Derek first learned while growing up in Tampa, Florida.

“We’ve always been very involved in their upbringing, focusing on shaping their development from the start,” he said. “actively try to instill the values I learned growing up, alongside insights I’ve gained over the years.”

Some of that education happens through direct conversations. Much of it happens through the life Derek and Lori model. Their children have watched their parents work, serve their community, maintain relationships and continue pursuing interests outside their careers. Travel and family adventures have given them opportunities to experience new places together, while sporting events have created another point of connection.

Copeland also makes room for interests that keep him learning. He enjoys travel, cooking, gardening, chess and fitness, as well as seeking out unfamiliar experiences. Those pursuits may appear unrelated, but each asks something different of him. Cooking invites creativity. Gardening requires patience. Chess rewards the ability to think several moves ahead. Fitness demands consistency.

“I also view success as continuously embracing new experiences and opportunities that enrich life,” he said. “Whether it’s through traveling, learning how to cook, gardening, playing chess, or exploring other interests, these activities contribute to my personal growth and broaden my perspective.”

The couple is now watching the family dynamic change as college, athletics and adulthood pull their children toward more independent lives. Copeland does not see that transition as the end of active parenting. He sees it as a new form of it.

His goal is not to plan every step his children take. It is to give them a foundation sturdy enough to make thoughtful choices when he is no longer standing beside them.

Derek Copeland Works Hard to Balance Family and a Career

Copeland’s instinct to connect achievement with responsibility appeared early. At 18, while still in high school, he won a seat on the Hillsborough County Soil and Water Conservation District and became the youngest elected official in Florida. The role allowed him to champion conservation initiatives and community education before most people his age had chosen a college major.

He went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in finance with honors from the University of Florida. In 1996, the university named him Outstanding Male Graduate, its highest honor for a graduating student. He was also inducted into the UF Hall of Fame.

After college, Copeland joined Accenture as a technology and process consultant. The position brought him to Charlotte, where the city’s expanding financial sector opened a new direction. He moved into wealth management, holding roles at UBS Financial Services and Morgan Stanley before establishing SilverRock Wealth Partners.

His growing interest in commercial real estate eventually led him to co-found Morgan Capital Management, now Sentinel Grove Partners. The firm originates and syndicates private real estate investments for accredited investors seeking income outside public markets.

Copeland’s approach favors patience, liquidity and dependable cash flow. He believes people should resist allowing their expenses to rise automatically with their income and should build assets capable of supporting them over time. The objective is not simply to accumulate more, but to create enough stability to make thoughtful decisions.

“First, I place a strong emphasis on creating a predictable and steady passive income stream,” he said. “Additionally, maintaining sufficient liquidity is crucial for managing unforeseen financial events effectively. Living within one’s means is essential, ensuring that expenses do not increase in tandem with rising income levels.”

The same long-range thinking appears at home. Copeland speaks with his children about business practices because he wants them to understand that integrity, discipline and accountability are not workplace concepts set aside at the end of the day.

“These values act as guiding principles, providing a framework that transcends both personal life and professional responsibilities,” he said. “By integrating these principles, I achieve a balance that ensures continuity and harmony between my career and family life.”

How Derek and Lori Copeland Make Service a Family Value

Giving back sits within the family culture Derek and Lori have created. Although Derek has held the formal board positions, he describes community service as an extension of values shared by his family and his business.

His longest civic commitment was to the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Foundation, where he served on the board for 12 years and helped raise money to support local officers and police personnel. He has also served organizations including the Steve Smith Family Foundation and the Charlotte Mecklenburg Dream Center, whose work includes assisting people experiencing homelessness.

In 2014, the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society named Copeland its Man of the Year in recognition of his fundraising efforts. The honor reflected his ability to use professional relationships on behalf of people he might never meet.

Copeland’s service has also given his children a view of success that reaches beyond personal comfort. In the Copeland household, professional achievement comes with an obligation to notice the needs of others and respond with whatever resources, knowledge or influence a person can offer.

“I firmly believe that business leaders should contribute back to their communities in pro bono ways, helping those who may not be as fortunate,” he said.

The Legacy Derek Copeland Wants to Leave His Children

Derek Copeland’s future plans remain ambitious. He wants to expand public education about private investments through podcasts, books and articles. He also hopes to continue mentoring younger professionals and making an industry that can seem inaccessible easier to understand.

Each summer, his firm welcomes several interns from high school and colleges and provides educational programs for investors. Copeland considers sharing knowledge part of his responsibility, particularly when access to financial information and experienced mentors can influence the course of a young person’s career.

His most personal goal, however, remains unchanged.

“On a personal level, my goal is to continue to nurture and guide my children through their journeys into the world,” Copeland said. “Giving back to the community, supporting my family, and building a thriving business are central to my future aspirations.”

Copeland says a career can be summarized through titles, honors and transactions. A family cannot. Its success is revealed gradually, in the relationships that endure, the values children carry forward and the way they eventually make room for others. Long after the titles and transactions recede, that is the work Copeland expects will matter most.

“I love my family, and I’m so thankful for Lori and the life we’ve built together,” Derek Copeland, Charlotte, NC, said. “Watching our children grow into their own people has been one of the greatest joys of my life. I hope we’ve given them a strong foundation and helped pave the way for whatever they choose to do next.”
