Shelton Powell Is Building the Systems Behind Better Ecommerce

al cMost entrepreneurs talk about growth. Shelton Powell talks about systems.

That difference has shaped his career from the beginning.Powell, founder and CEO of Cart Capital, did not start with investors, a detailed business plan, or years of corporate experience. He started with a paycheck from a summer co-op job, curiosity about ecommerce, and a willingness to learn by doing. Today, he leads an ecommerce infrastructure company that has helped build hundreds of online brands while continuing to focus on the operational side of business that many people overlook. His journey is less about chasing trends and more about building foundations that last.

Who Is Shelton Powell?

Shelton Powell was born and raised in Ottawa, Canada, with strong Jamaican roots that continue to influence how he approaches both business and life.

His father made sure he understood where his family came from. Trips to Jamaica were never simply vacations. They were opportunities to see different realities and understand the value of hard work and responsibility.

“Those trips weren’t vacations—they were perspective,” Powell says. “They gave me a deep understanding of what I had, what I was responsible for, and what I needed to create for myself.”

That mindset would later shape the way he approached entrepreneurship.

Growing up, Powell admits he was not a traditional student. He often found himself making classmates laugh more than focusing on academics. Football became an important part of his life because it gave him structure and something to pursue.

But eventually, he realized it was not where his future belonged.

“Watching my peers and how committed they were, I realized I didn’t have that same fire,” he says. “I couldn’t fake it.”

How Shelton Powell Found Ecommerce

Everything changed when Powell discovered ecommerce at 16 Instead of spending his free time like most teenagers, he became fascinated with how online businesses worked. He studied websites, products, marketing, and operations while continuing to attend school.

“I was that kid in the back of the class running ecommerce brands,” he says. “Nobody around me saw it. But I saw it in myself, and that was enough.”

His first business investment came from his own earnings. At 15, Powell joined the YIPI paid co-op program through the Ottawa Police Service. Every dollar from that first paycheck went into building his first ecommerce venture. He later worked at the YMCA, Lone Star, Five Guys, and Bell Canada. Each job helped fund his bigger goal.

“I wasn’t building a career in those jobs,” Powell says. “I was funding a vision.”

Those experiences also taught him how businesses operate from the ground up. He learned customer service, teamwork, accountability, and daily operations long before leading his own company.

Building Cart Capital From the Ground Up

In April 2020, Powell made one of the biggest decisions of his career. At 19 years old, he left Bell Canada and committed to entrepreneurship full time. The timing surprised many people. The COVID-19 pandemic had created uncertainty across nearly every industry. While others paused, Powell accelerated. He entered the ecommerce agency space by helping influencers launch merchandise brands, building ecommerce websites, and creating operational systems for growing businesses. Over time, he noticed something important. Many businesses focused heavily on sales and marketing, but very few invested in the systems needed to support long-term growth.

That observation became the foundation for Cart Capital.

Today, the company manages business setup, supplier relationships, payment processing, media buying, creative strategy, and backend operations. It operates with a team of more than 40 people and has contributed to the development of hundreds of ecommerce brands.

“Real brands are built through systems, not hype,” Powell says.

Why Systems Matter More Than Short-Term Success

Throughout his career, Powell has become known for emphasizing infrastructure over excitement. He believes many businesses grow faster than their operations can support. That creates problems.

“Most businesses fail operationally before they fail financially,” he says. “People underestimate how important systems are until things start breaking.”

When those breakdowns happen, Powell sees opportunity instead of failure.

“Every time systems have broken, I call it a transitional period,” he says. “It forces you to identify weaknesses and build something stronger.”

Rather than reacting emotionally, he focuses on solving the next problem.

“The operators who succeed are the ones who don’t dwell on what went wrong but immediately shift to what needs to happen next.”

That practical mindset has become one of the defining characteristics of both his leadership and his company.

Looking Beyond Business Growth

While Powell continues expanding Cart Capital, his goals extend beyond ecommerce.

He is also developing a product sourcing and fulfillment company designed to strengthen supply chain operations, along with a growth infrastructure agency that helps businesses improve sales systems, customer relationship management, and operational performance.

Outside of business, he is building a digitommunity for people looking for alternatives to traditional education and career paths.

He shares lessons from his own experiences through YouTube and educational content focused on systems, execution, and long-term thinking.

“The goal is simple,” Powell says. “Make sure the next generation has more options than I felt I had.”

A Career Built One System at a Time

Shelton Powell’s career did not follow a conventional roadmap. He learned through experience, built while others doubted him, and focused on solving practical problems instead of chasing attention.

His definition of success reflects that same philosophy.

“Success, to me, is simple,” he says. “It’s the ability to define a clear outcome and then achieve or exceed it.”

That mindset continues to shape every business he builds. For Powell, lasting success is not created by shortcuts or trends. It comes from building strong systems, staying close to the work, and improving one process at a time.
