Comau, a global leader in automation solutions, is entering new industrial sectors through a series of collaborations that combine additive manufacturing with advanced automation. By partnering with multiple international technology providers, Comau aims to accelerate the adoption of affordable, digital, and sustainable production models across various industries, including automotive, aerospace, marine, energy, microfactories, tooling, and construction.

Comau Advances Automation in Additive Manufacturing Through Global Industry Collaborations

Comau forms strategic collaborations with key industry players to advance digital additive manufacturing across multiple sectors. These partnerships enable on-demand, efficient, and sustainable production through the use of automation and robotics. Targeting markets such as aerospace, automotive, naval, and microfactories, Comau’s solutions support reshoring and circular manufacturing. Initial collaborators include CEAD, KraussMaffei, Prima Additive, and Titomic, all integrating Comau’s robotic technologies in their systems.

The strategic objective of these partnerships is to enable on-demand production through consistent and repeatable 3D printing applications, supported by automated systems. This allows manufacturers to optimise material usage, reduce waste, and improve overall production efficiency. The initiative aligns with global efforts towards reshoring and the growing demand for sustainable manufacturing.

Key collaborations enhancing global manufacturing capabilities

Among the first of these partnerships is CEAD, a company specialising in large-format thermoplastic composite 3D printing. CEAD integrates Comau’s robotic arm technology into its Flexbot system to deliver scalable solutions across industries. Its capabilities support customers in producing large-scale components, including boat hulls, and establishing distributed microfactories worldwide.

Another major collaborator is the KraussMaffei Group, a leader in plastic and rubber machinery manufacturing. Its portfolio spans injection moulding, extrusion, reaction process machinery, and additive manufacturing. By combining process, product, and digital solutions, KraussMaffei supports full value chain optimisation.

Prima Additive by Sodick, which designs and distributes industrial systems globally, has partnered with Comau to showcase a dual-layer laser cladding system. This high-speed, fully automated solution for brake disc coating highlights how laser-based additive manufacturing can enhance efficiency in the automotive and energy sectors.

Additionally, Titomic, recognised for its cold spray technology, is working with Comau to deliver large-scale additive manufacturing and repair capabilities. These integrated systems – used in aerospace and defence – employ novel materials and advanced software, powered by Comau’s robotics.

“Comau’s strategy of entering new market sectors to meet the increasing demand for advanced manufacturing technologies is being accelerated through a series of important collaborations with leading partners and customers across various industries. This approach exemplifies our dedication to innovation and marks an important step in our broader journey toward global growth,” says Giacomo Del Panta, Chief Customer Management Officer of Comau.

The joint initiatives serve to expand Comau’s presence beyond traditional manufacturing into sectors with evolving production needs. By combining additive technologies with automated processes, Comau and its partners are contributing to more agile, decentralised, and resource-efficient production models.
